Tip - Wet Entry
Knowing how to re-mount your kayak (WET ENTRY) could save your life...especially in cold water!!Learn and practice this now while the water is warmer and try a swimming pool or someplace close to shore.
My first 2-3 trips in the yak, I walked it down to the beach and went out to roll it over on purpose and practiced the Wet Entry technique about 20 times (told the lifeguard first so that he would not come and rescue the "old man"...LOL)
The best technique for SOT owners is the B-B-F one (Belly, Butt, Feet):
- If the yak has turned turtle, just reach over or under and flip it over right side up.
- You should be perpendicular to the yak with your head and shoulders right in front of our seat area. "Swim" by pulling the kayak under you and kicking your legs at the same time until your BELLY is over your seat area.
- Turn over onto your BUTT
- Bring your FEET back into the yak....one at a time!! Easy, peasy!!
From personal experience, if/when you tip you will keep a "death grip" on your paddle...and if it is connected to the kayak, you will be also!! The coiled cord type are fine if you just keep them out of your lap.
I just use a 6' piece of parachute cord with a loop in each end...put one loop thru a pad eye on the side of the yak and loop the other one over the blade of your paddle OUTSIDE of the drip ring....less clutter and out of the way.
You DO NOT want to come to the surface all wet and disoriented, and see your kayak drifting away with the wind behind it...you will NOT be able to out swim it on an open lake or in the ocean....be safe!!
Let's go fishing!!
